Mid way up the Napa Valley, Rutherford is prized for its diverse soils derived mainly of marine sediments and volcanic deposits. This “Rutherford Dust” is said to give a distinctive tannin structure and ageability to the sub-appellation’s wines. The 2019 Encore Vineyard cuvée is complex and perfumed with ultra-ripe fruit flavours brightened by refreshing eucalyptus and spearmint notes. Bold and tannic on the palate with plenty of depth. 2023-2033.–JB
Backstage Cabernet Sauvignon, Coombsville, Napa Valley, Vibrato Vineyard
The San Pablo Bay draws marine breezes and overnight fog into Napa’s southern sub-appellations like Coombsville. The 2019 Vibrato Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon displays these cooling influences with its tangy red and dark fruit, bright acidity and firm yet polished tannins. Finishes with lingering smoky, savoury hints. Cedar and subtle spice notes from ageing in French oak barrels are well integrated. 2023-2033.–JB
Backstage Cabernet Sauvignon, Howell Mountain, Napa Valley, Green Room Vineyard
The Green Room vineyard is perched at almost 500 metres in the Howell Mountain sub-appellation of Napa. The shallow, rocky volcanic soils force the vines to dig deep here bringing a lot of concentration and tannic grip to the wines. This 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is firm and full bodied with spicy mineral notes that enhance the black fruit core. Finishes fresh with fine-grained tannins. Decant one hour before serving. 2024-2034.–JB
