Growing grapes in Ribeira Sacra is known as "Heroic Viticulture" since the steep slopes on which the vines are planted make it very difficult to cultivate and prevent the use of machinery. The effect of the rivers Sil and Miño create an ideal microclimate for growing grapes. The winter and spring rainfalls provide sufficient water to assure that the plants grow in a naturally balanced and normally limited manner. The stony soil is created by the degradation of slate, making it completely different from other areas where the soil has resulted from erosion. The pH of the soil is acid and not alkaline as in most parts of the world. There is little clay. The effect on the climate of the Cantabrian Sea and the Atlantic Ocean is unique since there is a strong maritime element thanks to which we can refer to the resulting wines as "cool wines" or wines from a cool climate. This adds an element rarely found since the nights are cool and the days hot but not like the continental zones. The wines have natural high acidity and a low PH. Ribeira Sacra is an area that combines unique characteristics which, well managed, result in wines of a distinct character that will surprise even demanding consumers.
