In this case we find two anchor grapes responsible for the best of what the Southern France has to offer, more often as blends, but in this case, as varietal bottlings, from the same sub-appellation, same vintage and by the same producer. That makes the comparison all the more compelling. Is the result normally greater than merely the sum of two parts? Or do the single varietals also offer a complete wine experience? Do we even have to choose? Well, that's your chance to decide for yourself.
CHÂTEAU CANET LA CHAPELLE, AOP MINERVOIS, CUVÉE GRENACHE, 2022
Grenache with just 10% Syrah. A very deep ruby, opaque hue. The nose features medium-intensity aromas of red plum reduction, cream, chicory root, gingerbread, honey cake and dried nasturtiums. There is a medium-minus acidity on the dry palate, a medium extract, medium fine-textured tannins, a medium body, and a nice cushy presence and attractive flavours of walnut, red plum reduction, gingerbread, honey cake and dried flowers with a medium-plus finish. A decent poise and balance considering the ripeness of fruit here. 2026-2027
CHÂTEAU CANET LES EVANGILES, AOP MINERVOIS, CUVÉE SYRAH, 2022
Composed of 90% Syrah and 10% Grenache, this wine was aged for 14 months in barrels. It pours a deep, opaque black-purple. The nose reveals medium-intensity aromas of tar, cold embers, hickory, prune, dark chocolate, toffee, and hazelnut spread. Dry on the palate, it offers medium acidity and extract, with fine-textured, medium-plus tannins that build steadily. The medium-plus body is supported by warming alcohol and a grippy mouthfeel. Flavours mirror the nose—prune, tar, embers, chocolate, and hazelnut—leading to a medium-length finish. 2025-2027
