Stone Valley is a great place for great wine! Maybe not perfect for laying down a blanket and enjoying a picnic, the rocky soil where Stone Valley wines are born is ideal for grape growing. The Kautz family carefully selected the vineyard sites among the rocks, cobbles and gravel found in the northeastern portion of the Lodi AVA in Sloughhouse and Alta Mesa. The rocks restrict the vines’ growth, which naturally concentrates the grapes, giving them extraordinary depth and complexity. The higher elevation and warmer microclimates of these AVAs, create an ideal growing environment for our varietals to thrive. Sustainable practices are employed in these special vineyards, including the use of cover crops to optimize organic matter and reduce evaporation. Nesting structures for geese, boxes to foster owl habitation and raptor perches to increase the population of vermin predators dot the landscape.
