Kershaw GPS Klein River Syrah, 2018

Stunning wine – this couldn’t be anything other than a Coup de Coeur. Aromas of vanilla, black and red fruits, toast and spice give an impression of depth and warmth. The palate is smooth with a fine texture. Quite light mid palate, it develops savoury flavours to complement the fruit and oak. Klein River is one of the smallest wine wards in South Africa which was traditionally used as pasture for sheep and to grow wheat. The Kleinrivier Mountains are Africa’s southernmost mountain range with vineyards planted on either side of the river. Two vineyard blocks of Syrah – one trellised, one bush vine – were planted twenty years ago on virgin shale-derived Glenrosa soil. The nearby Akkedis Valley provides cool sea breezes from Walker Bay.
