The Johnston family of SEMAV represent 11 generations of negociants in Bordeaux. It was in 1716 that William Johnston left Ireland for Bordeaux to learn the wine business, a success that has developed into the well known house of Nathaniel Johnston and Sons founded in 1787. In fact it wasn't until 1840 that the Johnstons abandonned their agricultural products deciding to specialize only in wines. This was at a time when the style for "new French claret" from Bordeaux was becoming very popular in England. In 1840 Nathaniel purchased a 10% part of Château Latour and when he died in 1870 Nathaniel III left to his seven children considerable property. Currently brothers Denis and Archie deal with the international market and have become well-known to many Opimians.
