Producers have long disproved any notion that Barbaresco is the poor cousin of Barolo – and this is top class wine by any standards. It boasts sweetness of fruit (not always a given with Nebbiolo) that is perfectly balanced by the acidity and tannin that are the hallmarks of this unique grape. Textbook flavours of baked red fruits, sweet spice and walnut. A lovely example that will no doubt evolve excitingly after more time in bottle. 2026-2030–RB

VIGIN MONTERSINO BARBARESCO DOCG, 2021

Medium garnet hue. Proper tar and roses nose, leading to a muscular palate heavy on flavour and tannin. There is baked plum, clafoutis, and no apology for the alcohol, either, in this crowd-pleasing, sweet fruited style that delivers on the vintage hype. 2026-2028–MP
