The Old Tom style of gin is slightly sweeter and richer than London Dry Gin. This type of gin was popular in 18th-century England but since fell out of favour. In recent years, Old Tom has been making a quiet comeback as craft gins proliferate around the globe. Winestillery makes small batches of excellent Old Tom gin in their 500-litre pot still. The nose is very fragrant with pleasing notes of lemon verbena, cucumber and nutmeg to complement the classic juniper aromas. Very lively on the palate with a smooth entry and excellent depth of herbal, orange peel, honeyed flavours. Finishes dry with a lingering fiery, peppery hint. A really flavourful gin that holds its own served neat or on the rocks. - JB
