When tasting a vertical, I recommend starting with the oldest vintages first. With more the time to soften and integrate, these are usually the wines with most complexity and most approachable tannins. Tasting a youthful wine with robust tannins first can coat the palate masking the refinement that the older vintages have to offer. The 2017 Malvirà Barolo showcases a bouquet of raspberry, plum, rose and cinnamon with flavours of plum, baking spice, raspberry and blueberry. Tannic grip is provided by firm yet accessible tannins.
Malvira Barolo DOCG Boiolo
While the entire vertical of Malvirà Barolo is stunning, the 2018 was the highest scoring for me. It is youthfully compact and needs time to open, but the writing is on the wall. Concentrated and layered with a bouquet of rose petal, dried cherry, tea and mocha. On the palate, the experience begins with fresh fruit flavours of pomegranate, raspberry, plum and black raspberry and is complemented by the essence of dried red fruit, tea and mocha. The length, which is one of the most telling characteristics of a wine’s quality, is exceptionally long and satisfying. As expected, the tannins are unwavering, not yet having had the time to marry and integrate; however, it is this firm structure that will allow the wine to evolve in cellar for decades. Well worth the wait.
