Antiyal y Cia Ltda

Antiyal was founded in 1996 by Alvaro Espinoza and his wife Marina, “to teach their children, and all who would listen, about the earth, work and wine.” Antiyal is a Mapuche word (native Chilean), meaning “sons of the sun”. They believe that growing grapes biodynamically gives the wines greater depth and sense of place. It also ensures the land is in a good state for future generations. The family farms ten hectares of vines, one hectare of almonds, and has one hectare of prairies and seven hectares of forest habitat. All the biodynamic preparations are produced on the estate. The couple is surrounded by animals for manure and grows alfalfa for feed. All the vineyards at Antiyal are biodynamically grown with controlled vigour and yield. Yields are generally one kilo per vine. The fertility and resistance of the vines come from compost applications to the soil, produced from organic residues and manure from the farm. In effect, Antiyal is a closed system, an “organism” within which everything works symbiotically in balance. In 2007, Alvaro was awarded Personality of the Year by the International Wine Challenge. In 2015, Decanter voted him one of the world’s most influential winemakers, and today he is regarded by his peers as the leading authority on organic and biodynamic viticulture.
