The Portuguese grape Alfrocheiro was historically favoured for its early, reliable ripening. It was mainly used in blends for its deep colour and balanced sugar profile. Today, however, excellent single-variety bottlings are emerging–like this interesting 2018 vintage. This is a complex, juicy-fruited red with layers of floral, herbal and graphite. Very firm and tannic at present. Decant or pair with a weighty dish. 2024-2034–JB
