WHO THEY ARE

Opimian was founded on the expertise of Master of Wine Ken Christie. He passed the torch to Jane Masters, MW in the early 2010’s. In 2022, Opimian solidified it’s confidence in this expertise by bringing on several Canadian Masters of Wine to continue the tradition.

We now benefit from the knowledge and expertise of a distinguished tasting team that includes Joanne Ahearne MW, Richard Bampfield MW, Natasha Hughes MW, Andrew Jefford, Heidi Mäkinen MW, and Michael Palij MW. Each brings unique perspectives and favourite regions, yet all share the same rigorous standards of assessment—ensuring that Opimian wines truly represent the best of the best.

WHAT IS A MASTER OF WINE (MW)?

Master of Wine is a qualification issued by The Institute of Masters of Wine in the United Kingdom. It is not to be mistaken with a Master Sommelier (MS), which is geared towards individuals working in hotel and restaurant beverage service. Both credentials are regarded as the highest achievement in the wine industry, as applicants must pass an examination, recognized worldwide for its rigour and high standards.

A Master of Wine proves his or her understanding of all aspects of wine. Graduates include winemakers, buyers, journalists, shippers, business owners, consultants, academics, and wine educators. For more information:
