A Conversation with the Winemaker: Passion, Tradition, and the Spirit of Soave

For generations, this family-run estate has crafted wines rooted in passion, heritage, and a deep respect for the volcanic soils of Soave. In this interview, we sit down with the winemaker to explore the inspirations behind his craft, the traditions he cherishes, and the wines that define his philosophy today. From childhood memories to new experiments in the cellar, his answers reveal the heart and humanity behind each bottle Opimian members have come to love.

Q&A

1. What does your long-standing relationship with Opimian mean to you?

Being part of the same team.

2. When did you first realize winemaking was more than a profession—your true life’s passion?

Thanks to the passion of my father.

3. Which wines in your current portfolio best embody your philosophy today?

I would say “Verso” Soave Superiore Classico DOCG.

4. If you were not a winemaker, what path might you have followed instead?

Probably a musician.

5. After all these years, what part of your work still excites you most?

Definitely the harvest. In one month, you must decide which game you want to play.

6. Which winemaking traditions do you hold most sacred, and why?

The most traditional wine is “Passo,” our Recioto Classico DOCG. We still follow the same procedure my grandpa used.

7. What is the most unforgettable wine you have ever tasted?

“Verso” Soave Superiore DOCG 2018 Riserva.

8. Outside the vineyards and cellar, how do you recharge and find inspiration?

Playing music.

9. Which bottle do you most often reach for at home?

“Fonte” Soave Classico DOC.

10. Do you have a favourite wine—your own or one from another region?

Arneis from Piemonte.

11. Red, white, or rosé—what’s your personal preference?

White.

12. Opimian is presenting the F Special Edition, Soave Classico DOC 2021 as its featured wine. What can you share about it?

This is a good question! Normally we age our white wine in stainless steel, but for the first time we took on the challenge of aging this beautiful wine in French oak barrique. And we won’t produce it every year—only when we are 100% sure of the quality.

13. How do you feel knowing that Fonte, Soave Classico DOC 2024, was selected as a Coup de Cœur? What can you share about this wine?

“Fonte” Soave Classico DOC is the icon of our cellar. We can recommend this wine any time of day. It’s so easy-drinking—fresh, mineral, and the perfect expression of our volcanic region.

14. If you had to capture your winemaking philosophy in a single word or sentence, what would it be?

Let our wine speak.

15. Can Opimian members visit your vineyard? How do you welcome them?

They are absolutely more than welcome at any time. We offer tastings every day, bring guests through the vineyards, visit the cellar, and enjoy the wines together.
