Albana
Producer
Romagna Albana was the first Italian white to earn DOCG status. Tenuta La Viola — organic since the 1990s, biodynamic since 2018 — makes the version that explains why. Frangipane Albana blew our Managing Director away in April. Jo Ahearne MW selected the Albana as her Coup de Coeur.
Albana needs a hot climate to ripen fully, and, accordingly, this is not a shy wine. Very well balanced, with an appealing crunchy texture and a whoosh of brambly autumnal fruit and spices. There is quince, pear, baked apples drizzled with honey, and a grind of white pepper, like mum's gone mad in the kitchen. Full of personality and worth the investment. 2027-2028 – JA
