GMH MERITAGE CASE: 3 BOTTLES EACH 2022 & 2024
GMH MERITAGE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA, 2022
Be still my beating heart! You need to know that the only reason these two vintages are in a mixed 6-pack is that I couldn't decide which one I preferred. It's a bit Cary Grant v The Rock in that this is lithe, sculpted, and very light on its feet whereas the 2024 is all about raw power. But there is room in the cellar for both, and this is an essay in quiet, deft maturation, with a long finish, silky tannins and enough complexity to send a second growth scurrying for cover. 2029-

Deep ruby and seductive as hell. The nose is a feast for the senses, with ink, hospital bandages, tar, cooked plum, blackberry – I think I involuntarily reached for a knife and fork. The best thing about Geoff's Meritage blend is that for all the hustle and bustle on the nose, the palate is still keenly linear and structured. There's focussed acidity, grippy tannins and then the fruit wallop on the finish hits you like flooring a Tesla for the first time. I cannot believe this is the swansong vintage of this Aussie stalwart. Chapeau, Geoff. 2028-2032–MP
