Tenuta La Viola

Romagna Albana was the first Italian white to earn DOCG status. Tenuta La Viola — organic since the 1990s, biodynamic since 2018 — makes the version that explains why.  Il Colombarone Sangiovese blew our Managing Director away in April.

Medium ruby hue. The wines of Romagna are often overlooked, but the subzone of Romagna Sangiovese Bertinoro aims to change that. The calcareous soils, rich in maritime fossils, produce wines that combine weight with fine tannins. This example has a delicate texture and is generous without being overblown. Savoury notes of green olive and rosemary mingle with red cherry and spice, plus there is also a hint of sweet vanilla. Bags of freshness and length. 2027-2029–JA
