A true great shows their ability across the varieties, and Markus does Pinot of which I am in awe. At present this is rather reserved, offering bramble, red currant, beetroot and wet stone on the nose, although this is undoubtably a sign of bashfulness because this has eons ahead of it. In time, the taut, silken palate will shed its reticence and offer fleshy depth, with truffle, cocoa and black cherry framed by wet stone. Mosel Spätburgunder had a lowly profile before Markus got a hold of it, and having tasted one of his examples from 30 years ago, I can attest to his magic. 2029-2040 – MP
