VIGIN BARBARESCO CASE - 3 BOTTLES EACH: COTTÀ AND MONTERSINO
Two elegant Barbarescos from Azienda Agricola Vigin – a family estate, founded in 1947 by a teetotaller, that has been making wines since 2002 from a modest five hectares spread across the MGAs (Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva, or subzone) of Cottà and Montersino. 2022 was a nail-biter in Barbaresco, significant water stress issues causing a challenge, and very short harvest windows keeping the growers on their toes. Nevertheless, Vigin have produced two wines of remarkable freshness: Cottà is the more classical, showing herbs and red fruits framed by firm Nebbiolo tannins, while Montersino is plush, with that extra texture melding a little with the tannins.
VIGIN COTTÀ BARBARESCO DOCG, 2022
Medium ruby with garnet rim. The layered nose is quite developed, showing sweet oaky spices, fresh and dried cherry fruit, bay leaf and earthiness. High acidity anchors the full-bodied, ripe palate with its grippy tannins, making for a classical style that remains approachable. 2027-2038–HM. Nebbiolo. 14%.

VIGIN MONTERSINO BARBARESCO DOCG, 2022
Pale brick red with orange rim. There is an almost New World sweetness to the red cherry fruit on the mid-palate, which offers a parting shot of savoury notes and rosemary that reminds you of its origin. This plusher style tries to envelop the tannins, but they still find a way out. A wine with a whole lot of time ahead of it. 2028-2039–JA. Nebbiolo. 14.5%.
